Hello everyone! I’m excited to show off the Starfish Shorts by Gracious Threads today! Jessica is giving away a copy of the pattern on her blog, but if you can’t wait to see if you won, it’s available in her Etsy shop.

I was given this pattern in exchange for testing it, but of course, all opinions are my own. These are actually my tester pair and as you can see, they started out great – now they’re even better with the revisions!

This is a unisex pattern with some seriously cute pockets and a clever waistband construction. There is a drawstring in the front – you can see I used some orange ribbon to match the stitching and pockets. I may replace it with some cording since it ended up a little girly, but it’s covered by his shirt for now :)

Speaking of his shirt, it’s the Anytime Tee, stenciled to match his shorts (just kidding, I did the tee for fun and it happened to match, but I’m totally pretending it was on purpose and that I had the ocean on my mind. Play along, please).

For my scrawny little John, I usually have to either take off an inch or two from the elastic measurements or make them adjustable with buttonhole elastic. With the drawstring, I could just tie them up to the right size, which was a nice change of pace! I used pirate fabric for the elastic casing and on the insides of the pockets.

I fussy cut these so a shark and a sea serpent would show, which is why I didn’t use the buttons the pattern calls for. I used scraps of orange denim for the outside of the pockets. I think they’re my favorite part!

John wore these for three days in a row – even to bed! – so they are definitely a win in his book!

“See ya!”
