Happy December everyone! My personal goal this year is to enjoy the holidays and not stress too much over them. One of the things I hate doing is putting up Christmas decorations (I know, I know, Scrooge much?). The reason being, I’m bad at taking them down! And by July, I might as well just leave them up for the next Christmas, right? So, in the spirit of Sew McCool’s 12 Days of Christmas Blog Tour, I decided to decorate my baby instead :) There a ton of other bloggers joining in with fun holiday ideas – be sure to check out the list at the bottom of the post!
Oh, did you think I meant a real baby? Timmy may be eighteen months, but he’ll always be my baby!
The idea behind the tour is to provide a tutorial or inspiration for something holiday related. I’ve seen these tiny Christmas lights in the button section at JoAnn’s for years and always wanted to make something with them. This year, I finally figured something out and I kinda love it!
The sweater is the Rival Raglan, cut a size larger so I could use sweatshirt fleece. The snowman face is also from JoAnn’s. I laid those down until I liked how they were spaced, then sewed them on. I traced the face by putting a glass mouth-side-down over the buttons. The hat is a simple square with a rectangle at the bottom.
I used a scrap of bias tape for the red ribbon and wrapped it under the edges of the hat before sewing that down. The lights I added by hand in a random zig zag pattern, connected by a backstitch in yellow thread.
The pants are the newly released Cap. Comfort Jeans in a brown corduroy, lined with lightweight red and green wool. I did all the topstitching in cream thread and I love how it makes all the details stand out. I considered going crazy and appliqueing presents all around the hems and then realized that was… well, crazy. Instead I went with a big green tree! The fabric has these metallic green flakes which looked like mini lights to me.
I added three rows of lights and a gold star at the top.
Remember at the beginning of this post where I said I don’t do decorations? Fortunately for me, my in-laws do – and keep a clean house, just perfect for pictures ;)
Please keep in mind that little kids will put anything in their mouths that they can get their hands on! If you are inspired by my post (yay!) keep an eye on your kid while wearing an outfit like this. In fact, after Christmas, I may pick all the lights off so I don’t have to watch him all the time…
