Well, long time, no see, huh?? Every spring I get a lung/sinus infection and usually my doctor gives me antibiotics and I get over it – naturally this is the year they decided I needed to tough it out. And seven weeks later, I’m still “toughing it out”… Which means I haven’t been getting a lot of sewing done lately. Fortunately for me, Roxanne
has the perfect blog tour going on! Real Life, Real Sewing is all about using items we’ve made in real life and not just for “nice” pictures. I’m turning to Instagram
for non-staged, lightly-edited, iPhone pics ;)
First off, the main reason I sew – these crazy boys whose style can best be described as “the first thing(s) they picked up”:
1. What do you look for when choosing a sewing project?
Sometimes, though, I really want a project that I can sink my teeth into – I don’t have a problem spending days adding tons of (usually geeky) details to our clothes. One of my favorite details is adding embroidery (all done by hand or my sewing machine – no embroidery machine here :( ) to jeans pockets. These are my WWD Jeans
that I wear aaallll the time:
The embroidery file is from Urban Threads, but I can’t seem to find it anymore.
2. Is there anything you would like to (or wish you could) do differently when selecting projects?
Follow through with all of them! I totally have sewing ADHD! I have fabric and supplies for sooo many projects and not enough (child-free) hours in the day to sew them all!
Seriously – this is the least-scary corner (Jackalope tee
and… well, who knows, really…):
3. What is your most used/worn sewing project? This either could be of all time or currently.
I’m going to cheat a little and go with a technique, not a project ;) I started using this water soluble stuff
a few months ago and use it for everything! I used it for the Superman appliques above; it’s cut to fit through a printer, so I print embroidery files on it; and I used it for probably my favorite applique to date – this lace rhino:
I love the quote “Real unicorns have curves”, so I added this rhino to a Laundry Day Tee
and love how it turned out!
4. Do you have a project that you thought would be used/worn frequently but just did not end up working out?
Probably this self-drafted backpack – it has a dragon face on the flap and super-cool (I thought, anyway) wings. I can get the boys to wear it every so often, but this was the only time Tim wore it for more than a couple minutes. Totally bummed about it because I think it’s a lot of fun!
5. What is your favorite tip or quote that applies to sewing for real life?
This one from the Prydain Chronicles:
Sometimes, when I’m in a slump, I have to force myself to sew something totally boring and basic. Usually, just touching fabric and watching something come together is all I need to get the creative juices flowing again!
Do you have any examples of Real Life, Real Sewing to show off? You can play along by using the #realliferealsewing on social media. You can also win one of two $25 gift cards. More details at Sew 20.
