Mabel Madison Tour and Mackinaw Coat

I have two fun things to share today!I get to play along with Mabel Madison’s Valentines Day Blog Tour and I got to test the adorable new Mackinaw Coat from Call Ajaire. I have a lot of projects on my plate right now and fortunately, these two worked out perfectly together!

Mackinaw Coat from DbCA made with Mabel Madison fabric - sewn by Friends Stitched TogetherI used this red denim MM twill for the outer layer of the coat. It’s super thick and heavier than I was expecting. My machine was not happy about it, but we powered through and the finished coat is AHmazing! It’s warm and the perfect weight for an active boy and has a very soft finish.

It’s smooth and crisp and so soft! I managed to squeeze the lining out of half a yard and I can’t wait to sew up the rest.

Mackinaw Coat from DbCA made with Mabel Madison fabric - sewn by Friends Stitched TogetherI love the cheerful print and the vibrant colors of the mushrooms! The gray minky is from my stash and we love how the dots echo the little dots in the Stenzo fabric.

It may look intimidating, but the instructions are laid out really well and clearly illustrated. This is a size 5 on my skinny 4.5 year old, and it’s just a hair big, which is fine by me! We’re headed into spring and I want this to last more than one season. Plus, we’re going on a cruise to Alaska this summer (!!!) and this will give him plenty of room to wear a sweater underneath.

He really didn’t want to take his hands out for the pictures! The pattern included instructions for bound buttonholes, which I will admit to being a little scared of. I had planned on doing them on this coat, but it was coming down to the wire and I didn’t want to risk ruining the coat so close to being finished! Ajaire gives the great tip of trying them out on a scrap first, which I will definitely be doing once I give them a try.

Thanks for stopping by and be sure to check out the other stops on the MM tour – it’s such a great line up!
