Guardians of the Galaxy Cosplay

I’m bringing home one of my favorite posts for CraftingCon today. I’m making a packing list for a trip to Alaska in a few weeks and I’ve been pulling out all the boys’ cool-weather clothes. I ran across these and remembered how much fun we had with this photoshoot and wanted to share it again :)

Hi! This is Amy from Friends Stitched Together and I couldn’t resist sewing along with this week’s PR&P theme – I mean, as the co-founder of CraftingCon, this is kinda my jam! I took the opportunity to do a cosplay I’ve been wanting to do for a while now: Guardians of the Galaxy. I also did a Jack Frost cosplay over on Friends Stitched Together and it’s pretty darn adorable (if I do say so myself!)!

I’ve actually been working on a raglan tee and it hates me. Seriously, it’s been in testing for weeks and has gone through three revisions – I actually think it’s close to being ready, but I kinda don’t want anything to do with it anymore! So I cut up a large tee shirt and used the Safari Raglan from Titchy Threads. I added a freezer paper stencil to the front with one of the classic lines from the movie, of course. We have this available for you as a PDF and a studio file, as well as a more complicated studio file with a cassette silhouette (no way was I cutting that out by hand!).

The shoes are a little more Andy Dwyer than Peter Quill, but they’re all John ;)

Next is a highly modified Hobbes Jacket. Starlord (Peter Quill) actually wears several different jackets in the movie (how many jackets does one space pirate/hero need anyway??), so I decided to base John’s outfit on this one. I actually designed the Hobbes jacket by pulling details from a lot of cosplay-type jackets, so it had a lot of the lines I wanted. I added a yoke and some flaps and straps to the front. The sleeves are pieced in a few different places and also have straps that wrap partially around and then go into the sleeve itself through a buttonhole. I also flipped the button tab at the bottom to go behind the right side and added a Mandarin collar. Naturally, I had to line it with some galaxy fabric!

I spent like an hour using my machine with no thread to get a perforated texture to the overlay – I cannot resist adding time-consuming details to jackets! The pleather is from Joanns and I’m seriously crushing on it right now. It’s so soft and supple and it’s backed with something so I could add lots of topstitching and details without worrying about it tearing. The overlay is tacked down at the shoulders with some decorative stitching and left free until the bottom to mimic a vent.

I lucked out and found these men’s pants at Goodwill that were brand new and had all these pockets and zippers and rivets already installed! Once I got it home and looked at the construction, I could tell why they were still new – they were a MESS! I ended up cutting them into several different pieces and piecing them back together to get the details where I wanted them before cutting the pants pieces out.

“Ain’t no thing like me, except me” -Rocket. And Tim

For Tim, I used the Zanzibar Tank, swing style, in an orange terry cloth from Joanns. Because it doesn’t have any stretch, I used a black ribbing for the side stripe. The colorblocking on the front is black sweatshirt fleece and appliqued on. I found a little knitted shawl-thingy at Goodwill and used it for the ears, which I just sewed into the hood before sewing it together. In my opinion, this is a very “everyday cosplay” touch – it’s totally geeky if you get the reference, but if you don’t, it’s just another kid wearing a shirt with ears, which has become pretty normal.

“I am Groot!”

The arm warmers are also from the shawl – just simple tubes sewn together. It’s still cold here, so he needed them for the pictures (Daddy bundled him up every few minutes, don’t worry!). The tank is going to be a perfect for wearing with his swimsuit at the lake this summer.

They’re also lined with sweatshirt fleece so they’re super warm and cozy. I used black ribbing on the pockets to mimic Rocket’s straps and things (here are some good pictures of his costume from the movie).

We had to settle for a little radio, but John thought it was the coolest thing ever! He was dancing and rocking out the whole time!
